Spiritual Direction
Cultivating Awareness of God's Presence
Spiritual direction is a prayer process in which a person seeking help in cultivating a deeper personal relationship with God meets with another for prayer and conversation that is focused on increasing awareness of God in the midst of life experiences and facilitating surrender to God's will.
David Benner
A spiritual director helps us make sense of the witness of the Spirit — assisting us to respond well to the question, 'How is God present to me and how is God, through the ministry of the Spirit, at work in my life?'
Gordon Smith
What Spiritual Direction Is Not
Spiritual direction is distinct from other modalities of care, guidance, and instruction. It centers uniquely on listening for the Holy Spirit rather than human advice.
Not Counseling
Not Life Coaching
Not Bible Study
Focuses on your present relationship with God rather than diagnosing or resolving psychological and emotional dysfunction.
Cultivates prayerful attentiveness and surrender rather than setting personal strategic goals, performance targets, or action plans.
Grounded in Scripture, yet focused on lived interior experience and discerning God's direct presence in daily events.
Not Discipleship
Not Teaching
Not Authoritarian
Honors your spiritual journey without following a predetermined skill-building track, curriculum, or instructional agenda.
The director listens alongside you as a companion rather than delivering lectures or imparting formal doctrinal instruction.
Respects your agency and autonomy before God, avoiding directives or pressure while holding space for your discernment.
